Haman's Ears

During February, March and April, Jodie led a Bible study with the youth girls at church from Beth Moore's Esther study. We spent about at week on each chapter, and we all really enjoyed it! Esther is such a dramatic story!

At the end of the study, we had the girls over to Jodie's house to make a cookie recipe at included in the back of the Esther study--the cookies are filled with jelly and smooshed into little triangles, and they're called "Haman's Ears". We made these with the girls, and watched the Esther movie called "One Night with the King"--not entirely Biblically accurate, but still a fun romance.


It was great--the girls loved the cookies, and they enjoyed the movie too . . . they were tsk-tsking at all Haman's evil antics, and we all breathed a collective sigh of relief when the King extended the golden scepter.


I wouldn't have thought that the life of the queen of Persia could have much connection with the lives of Malagasy girls in a tiny town on the southwest coast of Madagascar, or with my own. But the truth is, women are women, no matter where we are from and how we live. I think we've all felt as Esther must have, to some degree. One of the chapters in the Beth Moore study is called, "It's tough being a woman who feels responsible for the how"--and these girls are often responsible for some heavy "hows" . . . how to help their families, how to get an education, how to come out from under the weight of poverty, how to make God happy. They were impressed with Esther's shrewdness and wisdom, and they could see that God was fighting for her. Pray with me that they will lay the burden of their "hows" on Him.
