a little deeper into the forest . . .

This month when I visited my group in the forest, we met in their village (about 4k from the bigger town we met in last month). The Lord has truly shown Himself faithful in going before and behind me—I could tell that the people were so much more relaxed and open with me this time around, and they are definitely starting to catch on to the storycrafting process.

I had a couple of new experiences on this trip: I got to ride in an oxcart, wade through muddy water up to my knees, and try some tiny fish cooked in oil over rice. The oxcart was really fun . . . amazingly, something about the way it’s built makes it lean and lunge back and forth, side to side, and up and down . . . a little bit like a roller coaster! And the girls in the village told me (while we were wading through the water), that an animal lives in the water called a “water baby.” “It’s a white animal,” they said, “so it prefers to grab white people . . .”

The story we worked on was about the Spirit World: how God created angels, and then some of these angels became demons, and how all who believe in Jesus have power to overcome anything that Satan tries to do against them. We acted out the story, and their excitement matched mine as the meaning of this story began to sink in. For us as westerners, overcoming Satanic forces may not be something we ponder often. But evil is a very real and present part of the lives of these villagers. Much that they do is centered around trying to appease and harness the powers they see at work in everyday life. Pray with me that this truth will take deep root in their hearts: “You are of God, and have overcome them; because greater is He that is in you, than He that is in the world.” (1 Jn. 4:4-5)
